Our latest information brief examines how COVID-19 has impacted and highlighted the HIV epidemic in rural Oklahoma. Despite the research and infrastructure needs to address HIV in Oklahoma, telemedicine and at-home testing have seen a significant uptake in utilization as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic – further improving the opportunities for HIV prevention.

Children in the Care of Grandparents by County, 2019

Over 5% of children living in Oklahoma are cared for by their grandparents. Only eight other states have a larger portion of children residing in such circumstances. In rural Oklahoma, approximately 7% of children are cared for by their grandparents versus 4% in urban areas. At the county-level, 13.5% of children living in Choctaw County are cared for by their grandparents. Dewey County and Harper County both recorded 1.2% of children cared for by their grandparents.

Rapid Analysis: Examining the Impact of COVID-19 on Rural Communities and The Need for Per Capita Measures

Our latest research brief examines the importance of using per capita measures when assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on rural communities. We present evidence that shows rural communities in Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma are at a higher risk of COVID-19 related deaths due to a combination of greater rates of comorbidities associated with deaths and considerably fewer hospital beds per capita than urban areas.

Presented by the Oklahoma Office of Rural Health, Sherry Longacre, MSN, RN, senior quality improvement facilitator at Telligen, discusses the Telligen QI Connect program. Telligen is the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) designated quality improvement organization (QIO) for Oklahoma. Rural providers will find the content valuable as they undertake mandated QI activities. Ms. Longarce also discusses the COVID-19 response resources offered by Telligen.
